Vigil for Christmas Market Attack Victims in Magdeburg

A vigil for the victims of the Magdeburg Christmas market attack was held Saturday evening at the city’s cathedral. Attendees included victims’ relatives and rescue workers.

On Friday evening, a man drove into the Christmas market, resulting in five fatalities and injuring 200 people, 40 of whom were seriously hurt. Mayor Simone Borris expressed her deep shock during the memorial service and thanked the rescue workers.

Bishop Gerhard Feige urged attendees not to be consumed by hatred. “We are here together to support each other and bear the incomprehensible.

Together, we are here to ensure hate and violence do not have the final word.” Outside, the square was filled with people watching the service on a large screen. In memory of the deceased, dozens of candles and flowers were placed at the cathedral’s side portal and throughout the city.

Correspondent Charlotte Waaijers attended the memorial service.
