Investigation into Magdeburg attack continues

All individuals still hospitalized after the attack in Magdeburg on Friday are in stable condition, according to the intensive care director of the hospital, as reported by Süddeutsche Zeitung. Following the attack on the Christmas market, dozens were admitted to the hospital, most of whom have since been discharged.

The fifteen remaining patients are stable, the director stated. The investigation into the attack is ongoing, with police examining their own role.

German media report that a police car was not in its designated position at the market’s entrance and was instead at a taxi stand when the attack occurred. The safety plan of the Christmas market’s organizers is also being reviewed, and if errors are found, those responsible could face prosecution.

Public broadcaster MDR reports that complaints have been filed against the police and Magdeburg’s municipality, though the filers are unknown. On Friday evening, a man drove a rented car into the Christmas market in the eastern German city, resulting in five fatalities and over 200 injuries.

Shortly after, a 50-year-old Saudi national, living in Germany since 2006, was arrested. He worked as a psychiatrist and was previously convicted in 2013 for threatening an attack during a dispute with a medical association.

He presents himself online as an anti-Islam activist. German Interior Minister Faeser described him as Islamophobic.

Authorities have not disclosed any potential motive.
