Over 6,000 prisoners escape during riots in Maputo

During riots at a prison in Maputo, Mozambique, yesterday, over 6,000 prisoners escaped, the city’s police chief reported. Previously, it was estimated that about 1,500 prisoners had escaped.

The unrest resulted in at least fifteen people being injured and 33 prisoners losing their lives. A group of inmates, encouraged by protesters outside the prison, overpowered guards and seized their Kalashnikov rifles before freeing other detainees.

Among the escapees are 29 convicted terrorists, raising concerns among Mozambican security forces. The protests led to the collapse of a prison wall, facilitating the escape.

Video footage shows many fleeing prisoners attempting to hide in nearby houses, though some were recaptured. The unrest in Mozambique, particularly in Maputo, has been ongoing since the national election results of October 9.

The ruling party, Frelimo, reportedly received 70% of the votes, a result contested by the opposition, alleging vote fraud. International observers also noted irregularities.

On Monday, Mozambique’s highest court confirmed Frelimo’s victory, sparking protests that included looting and arson, leading to at least 21 deaths. Since the election, around 150 people have died.
