A Chinese man has been sentenced to death for driving into pedestrians in Zhuhai last month, resulting in 35 fatalities and injuring dozens more. The attack occurred near a stadium where many people were exercising.
The 62-year-old perpetrator was reportedly angry over his divorce. The incident took place on the eve of a major air show, prompting heightened security measures in the city.
Initially, China censored all reports of the attack, with details emerging only a day later. It is speculated that Chinese authorities withheld information to determine whether the perpetrator had political motives or out of concern for potential unrest or copycat incidents.
Similar events have occurred in China, including a recent case in Hunan province where a driver attacked schoolchildren out of frustration over business losses. That perpetrator received a suspended death sentence last week, effectively a life sentence.
Such attacks are not uncommon in China, but rarely do they result in as many casualties as the Zhuhai incident.
