Youth soccer referee assaulted in Deventer

A youth soccer match referee was attacked this weekend in Deventer. The referee halted the game between Sportclub Deventer and DVV Davo due to aggressive play, which prompted a negative reaction from a player’s father, reports regional broadcaster Oost.

The incident occurred on Saturday, and Sportclub Deventer’s chairman, Xander van Weeteringen, explained the referee had previously warned the young players about their conduct. When the match was nearing its end, the referee stopped it following two substantial fouls.

The assailant was a father of a DVV Davo player; the club condemned his actions and issued an apology. The disagreement intensified after a child cried and moved to the canteen, where a physical altercation occurred, according to DVV Davo’s chairman.

Sportclub Deventer also expressed regret over the incident. Subsequently, a 28-year-old man from Deventer was arrested, though police did not confirm his identity as the player’s father.

The referee has filed an assault report. DVV Davo noted the father’s remorse and his willingness to discuss the matter with the referee.

In September, the KNVB reported an increase in incidents in amateur football, citing societal issues as potential causes.
