An Asian elephant calf has died at Amersfoort Zoo. The four-year-old Yindi became trapped by her hind leg between a wall of tree trunks while playing outdoors, the zoo reported on Instagram.
“The only way to safely free her was to sedate her temporarily. Unfortunately, Yindi did not wake up from sedation.” Elephants mourn their deceased peers similarly to humans, so Yindi’s body was moved to the indoor enclosure to allow the other elephants, including Yindi’s mother, to bid farewell.
