World’s largest iceberg heading toward South Georgia

The world’s largest iceberg, A23a, is on a path towards a British island in the southern Atlantic Ocean. If it becomes grounded off the coast of South Georgia, the island’s penguins and seals could be at risk.

A23a covers approximately 3,500 square kilometers, making it slightly smaller than Gelderland but larger than the province of South Holland. This ice mass, weighing about one trillion tons, broke away from an Antarctic ice shelf in 1986 but remained lodged on the ocean floor east of the peninsula for over thirty years.

It began moving in 2020, driven northwards by wind and currents from Antarctica toward South Georgia. The iceberg gained momentum in 2023, heading towards the British island.
