Wine writer Nicolaas Klei passed away unexpectedly at the age of 63 last Saturday, without any prior illness, according to his former publisher and friend Joost Nijsen. Klei was known for his annual Supermarket Wine Guide, recommending the best wines available in supermarkets.
He also wrote columns for AD and Elsevier Weekblad and sold over half a million books on wine. Born on January 6, 1961, in Amsterdam, Klei studied legal history and published his first book, “Over de tong,” in 1994, followed by titles like “Tot op de bodem” and “Van druif tot dronk.” In 2021, he released “De slankwandelaar,” a book about losing weight through walking.
Klei coined the term ‘omfietswijn,’ referring to wines worth going out of the way for due to their excellent value. Nijsen praised Klei in an Instagram post, highlighting his friend’s deserving of praise and gratitude.
