In Los Angeles, wildfires have resulted in the deaths of five individuals, destroyed thousands of homes, and forced the evacuation of over 100,000 people. Authorities describe the situation as an unprecedented catastrophe.
The annual fires have been intensified this year by the Santa Ana winds, known for their strength and dryness. These winds, typically occurring from September to May, are more powerful and unpredictable this year, rapidly spreading the fires.
Firefighter Erik Scott noted the unusual nature of these fires and their destruction. NOS meteorologist Willemijn Hoebert explained the role of the winds in creating favorable conditions for the fires.
Adriaan ter Huurne, a fire specialist, stated that these conditions are extraordinary for January. The rapid spread is due to dry summers and quick-growing grasses.
The prevalence of wooden homes in the region exacerbates the situation. It is estimated that controlling the fires will take at least another week and a half, with no rain predicted and concerns about future wind conditions.
