The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles have destroyed or damaged approximately 2,000 buildings and forced over 100,000 residents to evacuate. These fires are among the most devastating in the city’s history, with at least five fatalities reported.
The fire department struggles to contain the fires due to strong winds, persistent drought, and low humidity. Although some firefighting helicopters resumed operations as wind speeds decreased, five major fire zones remain, with Pacific Palisades being the hardest hit.
A CNN reporter described the area as a ghost town. Many celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal, and Leighton Meester, have lost their homes.
Historic buildings, such as a ranch built by early Hollywood star Will Rogers and the Topanga Ranch Motel, were also destroyed. A new fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills, leading to evacuations and traffic chaos on Sunset Boulevard.
The fires began on Tuesday, and while the cause remains unclear, three individuals were arrested on suspicion of arson, and others for looting. President Biden has canceled a planned trip to Italy due to the crisis.
