US Treasury reports Chinese hacker breach in December

The US Treasury Department reported that Chinese hackers breached their systems earlier this month. The hackers accessed non-classified information.

Officials described it as “a significant incident.” On December 8, the department learned from a software provider that a hacker obtained a security key, according to CNN, which viewed a letter sent to Congress members. The Treasury suspects China but found no evidence of ongoing access.

They collaborated with the FBI and intelligence agencies to assess the breach’s impact. China denies involvement, with a Foreign Ministry spokesperson stating their opposition to all forms of hacking.

A spokesperson from the Chinese embassy in Washington also refuted the claims, criticizing unfounded US allegations.
