The United States has carried out airstrikes against the ISIS terrorist group in northern Somalia, marking the first such strikes under President Trump. U.S. Secretary of Defense Hegseth stated that the strikes took place in the Golis Mountains, resulting in the deaths of several ISIS members.
It is unclear whether there were any civilian casualties. President Trump, on his social media platform Truth Social, mentioned that an ISIS planner and recruits were targeted, claiming these “killers, found hiding in caves, threatened the United States and our allies.” Trump criticized previous inaction under Biden, stating, “I got it done!” The Somali authorities were informed ahead of the strikes by the U.S. Somali President Mohamud said the operation demonstrated the shared goal of combating terrorism.
The U.S. has regularly conducted such operations in Somalia over recent years, including during Biden’s administration. ISIS has been in Somalia since 2015, having split from the Somali terrorist group al-Shabaab.
Despite reportedly having only a few hundred members, ISIS frequently carries out attacks in the country.
