The United States conducted an airstrike in Syria yesterday, killing a key figure of the terrorist group ISIS, according to the US military headquarters Centcom. The individual targeted was identified as ISIS leader Abu Yusif, also known as Mahmud.
The strike took place in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, resulting in the deaths of two ISIS members, including Abu Yusif. Centcom stated that this airstrike is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt and undermine terrorist attacks on US civilians and military personnel, as well as allies and partners in the region.
General Kurilla of Centcom emphasized that the US, along with allies and partners, will not allow ISIS to exploit the current situation in Syria and regroup. The terrorist group reportedly plans to free approximately 8,000 ISIS fighters currently detained in Syria.
Kurilla affirmed that they will aggressively target these leaders and fighters, including those attempting to conduct operations outside Syria. ISIS previously occupied parts of Iraq and Syria a decade ago but was largely driven out by Kurdish YPG militias with US and allied air support.
In recent years, ISIS terrorists have increased their attacks in Syria and Iraq, although the area they control is only a fraction of their former self-declared ‘caliphate.’
