Unseen Herman Brood Drawings Found in Zwolle

In Zwolle, previously unknown drawings by Herman Brood have surfaced. These comic-style illustrations were created in 1962 by Brood, then 16, for a school newspaper.

According to broadcaster Omroep Oost, their discovery is linked to a lecture at city café Het Refter in Zwolle. The daughter of Hermen Overweg remembered that her father attended the same school as Brood over sixty years ago and had discussed the school newspaper Hermes, which featured Brood’s illustrations.

Overweg, who contributed historical articles, recalled asking the then shy Brood to illustrate his work about the school’s history. Only 200 copies of the paper were printed.

The drawings, confirmed as Brood’s, are on display at tonight’s lecture. Their future is yet undecided, though options include displaying them at the Herman Brood Museum or in the café.
