Trump Pardons Capitol Rioters, Sparking Backlash

Following his inauguration, Donald Trump has granted pardons to over 1,500 individuals involved in the Capitol riot, fulfilling a campaign promise. Among those released are former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio and Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes, both of whom were serving lengthy prison sentences for inciting insurrection.

Tarrio, who was sentenced to 22 years, was not present at the Capitol on that day due to a prior court order but was found guilty of encouraging his group’s actions. Rhodes, sentenced to 18 years, also did not participate directly but prepared his group for violent resistance.

The pardons have provoked strong reactions, particularly from those affected by the violence. A brother of a fallen officer and an injured officer expressed their outrage, while Republican Senator Thom Tilles criticized the pardons, arguing they undermine safety and accountability for law enforcement attacks.
