Truck accident in Ethiopia kills at least 71 people

A traffic accident in Ethiopia has resulted in the deaths of at least 71 people, according to local authorities. The victims were in a truck that plunged into a river.

Survivors have been taken to a hospital, with five in critical condition, as reported by a local government spokesperson. The truck was traveling on a winding road and missed the bridge over the river.

Some passengers were reportedly returning from a wedding. The accident occurred in the Bona district, approximately 370 kilometers south of the capital, Addis Ababa.

According to Reuters, fatal traffic accidents are common in Ethiopia due to poor driving skills and poorly maintained vehicles. In 2018, 38 people died when a bus, mainly carrying students, fell into a ravine in the northern part of the country.
