Trial for Erasmus Shooter Focuses on Mental Health

During the trial of Fouad L., accused of the September 2023 murder of his neighbor, her 14-year-old daughter, and a professor at Erasmus Medical Center, questions arose about his mental state. L. admitted to the actions, confirming difficulties in emotional recognition and processing due to an autism spectrum disorder, as diagnosed by experts from the Pieter Baan Center.

They noted his rational approach to emotions hampers communication. Additionally, L. has a dissociative disorder, leading to internal negotiations over his planned actions.

Experts have deemed him partially accountable and recommended compulsory psychiatric treatment. Despite his struggles, L. is open to receiving help.

The trial continues, with testimonies from victims and families expected in the coming days.
