Transnistria Faces Energy Crisis Amid Russian Gas Cutoff

Three large red-and-white chimneys rise in the distance, with smoke emerging only from the middle one. This is the power plant of Transnistria, the self-proclaimed pro-Russian republic in eastern Moldova.

The smoke comes from coal reserves being used to generate some electricity. Since the beginning of this year, the region has been cut off from Russian gas, triggering a gas crisis throughout Moldova.

Tens of thousands of households in Transnistria are without heating and face frequent power outages, while energy prices in the rest of Moldova have doubled. Concerns are growing over a potential humanitarian crisis if power fully fails in Transnistria.

Despite its alliance with Russia, the republic may need to consider accepting aid from the EU and Moldova.
