Train accident in India results in at least 12 fatalities

At least 12 people died in a train accident in western India after being struck by another train, with at least six others injured, according to Indian media. Passengers reportedly jumped from the carriages in panic due to a fire alarm.

They ended up on an adjacent track where an oncoming train hit them at full speed. The incident occurred in the Maharashtra province, around 400 kilometers northeast of Mumbai.

The passenger train, the Pushpak Express, was headed to Pardhade. The railway operator stated that the fire alarm was triggered after passengers pulled the emergency brake, potentially causing sparks that activated the alarm.

Fatal train accidents are not uncommon in India; in 2023, nearly 300 people died in a collision involving three trains.
