Trafigura fined over bribery involving Angolan oil deals

Trafigura has been found guilty of bribing a senior official of Angola’s state oil company, Sonangol, according to a Swiss federal court. The commodities company is part of the Dutch Trafigura Beheer BV, with its headquarters in Singapore and main trading activities in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Swiss Public Prosecutor’s Office reported that Trafigura, through a former employee, paid nearly five million euros in bribes between 2009 and 2011. Large sums were transferred to a Swiss bank account belonging to the Angolan official, and cash was also handed over.

The company engaged in this bribery to secure oil deals in Angola, which generated tens of millions in revenue.
