In November, three letters containing the toxic substance strychnine, a type of rat poison, were sent to Belgian government institutions. One person was injured while opening one of the letters, but no arrests have been made.
The letters were addressed to the office of Prime Minister De Croo and the ministries of Interior and State Security in Brussels. An employee of De Croo was injured on the hands after contact with the powder, and someone at State Security also came into contact with it and was placed in hospital quarantine for two days as a precaution.
Toxicological analysis confirmed that the letters contained strychnine, a white odorless powder used in rodent control, which can be deadly if ingested. Contact with the substance can cause skin irritation.
Earlier this week, a man armed with a knife was apprehended at De Croo’s office after making threats to police. He allegedly attempted to enter the building.
