Ton van Veen steps down as CEO of Jumbo

Ton van Veen will resign as the CEO of Jumbo, a position he has held for less than two years. His departure is expected within months, but his successor has not yet been announced.

Van Veen stated that leaving Jumbo was a difficult decision after being closely associated with the company for over two decades. Jumbo is owned by the Van Eerd family.

Frits van Eerd was the CEO until September 2022, when he stepped down due to allegations of money laundering, initially on a temporary basis. Van Veen initially replaced him temporarily and assumed the role permanently in March 2023.

Before this, Van Veen had reduced his involvement with Jumbo to focus on family and other personal interests. He mentioned that the unexpected circumstances led the Van Eerd family to ask him to guide the company through challenging times, and he believes there is now a solid foundation for further growth.

Colette Cloosterman-van Eerd, a co-owner of Jumbo and Frits van Eerd’s sister, is currently in discussions with potential successors. She acknowledged that significant strides were made under Van Veen’s leadership during a difficult period, reinforcing the trust in the company.

The trial concerning Frits van Eerd began last September. He is suspected of repeatedly laundering large sums but is not the main suspect.

That suspect is Theo E., a motorsport team manager and Drenthe-based car dealer. The prosecution alleges that Van Eerd received expensive gifts from or through E., like a car transporter, luxury toolboxes, and motocross bikes, in exchange for sponsoring sports teams with hundreds of thousands of euros from Jumbo.
