Belgian TV presenter and actor Tom Waes has been released from the hospital and is back home following a serious accident on the Antwerp highway. The Flemish broadcaster VRT halted all recording activities with Waes, allowing him time for recovery.
On the night of November 29 to 30, the 56-year-old Waes drove into a stationary arrow truck near the Kennedy Tunnel in Antwerp-Zuid. He was seriously injured and had to be freed from his old Porsche.
Waes later admitted to being under the influence and called it an “incomprehensible mistake.” Last week, Waes indicated that his recovery is expected to be lengthy. VRT previously expressed “regret” over Waes driving under the influence of alcohol.
The broadcaster stated they have agreed with Waes to prioritize his physical and mental recovery before discussing future plans, aiming to turn the incident into something positive. For now, Waes will not appear in new programs on VRT, but they hope to work with him again when everyone is ready.
Waes is known for his show Reizen Waes, also broadcast in the Netherlands, and his roles in the series Undercover and the history program Het verhaal van Vlaanderen. For KRO-NCRV, Waes is working on a sequel to his travel show and a new fiction series, Badgasten.
KRO-NCRV commented that driving under the influence is highly irresponsible and reprehensible.
