TikTok is no longer accessible in the United States. Shortly before the legal ban took effect, the app was disabled and became unavailable for download.
Users of the social media platform were informed through a notification. The app had approximately 100 million active users in the US who were told they “unfortunately cannot use TikTok for the time being.” At the beginning of 2024, a law was enacted labeling the platform as a national security threat due to its ownership by the Chinese company ByteDance.
The White House indicated that the Chinese government might be using TikTok to collect data from Americans on a large scale and influence them, though no hard evidence supports this. Washington and Beijing are engaged in a geopolitical power struggle.
