Three Explosions Rock Rotterdam Overnight

Last night, three explosions occurred at residential buildings in Rotterdam, resulting in material damage only, according to current information. Two of the explosions took place on the southern side of the city, at Vergiliusstraat and Adriaan Pieterstraat.

A threatening message was also found on the wall of the building on Vergiliusstraat, reading “death to cancer rats.” The third explosion occurred in the northern part of Rotterdam, on Rodenburgstraat in the Overschie district. Police have conducted an investigation.

Last year, there were 1,234 explosive-related incidents across the Netherlands by mid-December, over five times the number reported in 2021. The Rotterdam region experienced the most explosions, with 232 incidents.

In 80 percent of cases, heavy illegal fireworks such as Cobras were used. Police investigations show that more than half of the explosive attacks result from domestic disputes among non-criminal citizens.

This appears to have been the case with the devastating explosion at Tarwekamp in The Hague early last month, which resulted in six fatalities.
