Thousands urged to evacuate due to Malibu wildfires

Thousands of residents near Malibu on the US west coast have been ordered to evacuate because of wildfires that have reached the coastline. Approximately 700 firefighters are working to contain the flames, which threaten over 8,000 homes according to authorities.

Around 2,000 homes have been evacuated, with others on standby for possible evacuation. Some homes in Malibu, near Los Angeles, have been destroyed, although there are no reports of casualties.

The fire began on Monday evening, its cause still unknown, but strong seasonal winds have exacerbated its spread. The US weather service has issued the highest warning level for southern California, which has experienced numerous wildfires this year.

Notable evacuees include actor Dick Van Dyke, 98, and singer Cher, 78.
