In northeastern Australia, thousands have been evacuated following extreme rainfall and subsequent flooding. One person has died after a rescue boat capsized.
The city of Townsville and surrounding areas have been particularly affected, with high water levels. Rescue services have saved multiple people stranded on their rooftops, and large parts of the city are without power.
The Herbert River in the region is expected to reach its highest level in nearly 60 years. The Queensland area has faced tropical downpours in recent days, with about 700 millimeters of rain falling in the last 24 hours.
Meteorologists predict that the heavy rainfall will continue for the coming days, possibly easing by mid-next week. The east coast of Australia has frequently experienced flooding from heavy rainfall in recent years.
