The threat of a terrorist attack in the Netherlands is still significant, according to the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV). The threat level remains at 4 (substantial), the second-highest category, after being elevated from level 3 a year ago.
NCTV’s Aalbersberg points out that jihadist threats remain high, with the Gaza conflict as a key factor. Young individuals with jihadist sympathies are radicalizing more quickly online.
An incident on September 19 at the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, where a 22-year-old attacked people with a knife resulting in a fatality, is highlighted as an example. The suspect faces charges of murder with a terrorist motive.
There has been a considerable increase in jihadist attacks and arrests across Europe this year. The rapid online radicalization of youth plays a crucial role in the threat assessment, with jihadist youths easily contacting IS members online.
Concerns also exist regarding right-wing terrorist ideologies, with new extremist groups forming this year. Some individuals are engaging in racially motivated violence.
Aalbersberg expresses concern over the release of individuals convicted of terrorism, as more with a higher threat profile are expected to be released next year, including former Syrian fighters. Additionally, the report mentions radical sovereign citizens who reject government authority.
Eight individuals with such beliefs face prosecution for terrorist offenses, with three suspected of planning violent confrontations with local authorities. Despite arrests, a small group of violent sovereign citizens continues to pose a threat.
