Tensions around Taiwan have escalated with increased Chinese military activities observed near the island. In the past 24 hours, 47 military aircraft, 12 naval ships, and 9 civilian vessels, including coast guard ships, were detected around Taiwan.
A Taiwanese official described the situation as “very alarming.” The heightened Chinese military presence follows the return of Taiwanese President Lai from a diplomatic tour in the Pacific, which included visits to Hawaii and Guam. China views Taiwan as a breakaway province and has threatened military action if Taiwan moves toward independence.
The United States considers Taiwan a critical partner and reserves the right to intervene if China threatens the status quo. Beijing regards visits by Taiwanese leaders to the US as provocative.
According to Taiwan, the Chinese military conducted several exercises, testing tactics to attack naval ships and repel military and civilian aircraft, potentially aiming to isolate Taiwan economically and militarily. China conducted two large-scale military exercises around Taiwan earlier this year, which were also responses to foreign visits by Taiwanese officials.
Taiwan has stated its commitment to resisting any attempts by China to pressure the island through military intimidation.
