Temporary Generators Support Zeeland’s Power Supply

To meet the electricity demand in Zeeland during the Christmas holidays, grid operator Stedin installed two emergency generators. This was particularly necessary during dinner time, as stated by a spokesperson.

The generators were placed at the distribution station in Grijpskerke, municipality of Veere, due to significant load on the power network in the area, especially during peak periods like Christmas when more residents and tourists are present. This was Stedin’s first time implementing such a measure to prevent power outages.

The generators, capable of supplying electricity to 1,400 households, were installed a few days before Christmas and removed after the New Year. They were frequently needed between 4:00 PM and 9:30 PM.

The power network in Walcheren Noord, including Veere, has been under strain for some time, with the Grijpskerke station overloaded. Several companies are on a waiting list for additional power until at least 2028.

Stedin plans to alleviate the network strain by introducing a new distribution station in Grijpskerke and expanding the main station in Middelburg within three years. Temporary solutions are expected to continue, with preparations already underway for Easter.
