A small memorial of flowers and candles sits on the tram tracks in Rotterdam, where 14-year-old Jack died last night while setting off fireworks. Renate Degryse, Jack’s mother, stands with his two brothers in mourning.
The brothers described the incident to regional broadcaster Rijnmond, explaining it was a “shell,” a large firework that unexpectedly exploded upon ignition. Jack’s mother insists that he was always careful with fireworks, using safety glasses and extra fuses.
Degryse, who lives in Belgium, was on her way to Rotterdam when the accident occurred. She laments misinformation on social media suggesting negligence and emphasizes that Jack’s passion was handled responsibly.
The Rotterdam transport company, RET, may reroute trams if the memorial continues to grow.
