Teen Attacks Officer with Hammer in Zaandam Robbery

In Zaandam, a 17-year-old boy struck a police officer on the head with a hammer. The suspect was fleeing after robbing an electronics store with a 13-year-old accomplice, according to police reports.

The officer received medical attention but did not require hospitalization. The incident occurred around 2 p.m.

at a store on Gedempte Gracht in the Noord-Holland town. The 17-year-old from Zaandam and his young accomplice from Amsterdam smashed display cases with a hammer, stealing several phones.

Plainclothes officers in the area were conducting an exercise when they spotted the masked suspects running. An officer pursued them on foot and caught the older suspect.

The boy resisted and repeatedly hit the officer with a hammer. Despite the assault, the officer detained the suspect until assistance arrived.

The other boy was apprehended by bystanders and handed over to the police. Both suspects are in custody, and the stolen phones have been returned to the store.
