Tech giants face scrutiny over political influence

Several tech CEOs were present at the U.S. presidential inauguration, causing concern among users about political influence on the digital realm. Researchers, like Rudy van Belkom from Stichting Toekomstbeeld der Techniek, note this influence has been a long-standing issue.

Recent controversies include the U.S. TikTok ban, which was briefly lifted before Donald Trump’s inauguration, and policy changes by Meta, such as dismissing independent fact-checkers and removing some restrictions on hate speech. Meta claims these changes protect free speech, but researcher Michael Klos from Leiden University warns they could drive certain groups away from platforms.
