Ridouan Taghi’s new lawyers have requested sixteen months to prepare for the appeal in the Marengo case, citing the vastness of the case, which involves multiple murders and attempted murders. The case file spans 83,316 pages.
Lawyers Vito Shukrula and Carlo Crince le Roy argue that efficient preparation is hindered by the requirement from the Dutch Bar Association to jointly visit their client. They are also prohibited from using personal laptops during these visits.
They propose separating Taghi’s case from the other Marengo defendants. The prosecution deems the requested time too long, suggesting six months is sufficient, and the lawyers have threatened to resign if this is accepted.
The court has yet to decide on this request, which will occur before the next hearing in early February. Shukrula and Crince le Roy took over the defense last month after previous lawyers withdrew.
Taghi, once the most wanted criminal in the Netherlands, was arrested in Dubai five years ago and sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this year along with two co-defendants. The appeal will be addressed late next year.
