Syrian rebels capture strategic city of Hama

Syrian rebels have reportedly entered the city of Hama in northwest Syria, as reported by the Associated Press. The rebels, including groups such as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have made significant advances against government forces and have released hundreds of prisoners from a Hama prison, according to Reuters.

The rebels are believed to be heading towards Homs, located about 40 kilometers south. The Syrian government confirmed the rebels’ entry into Hama, stating that intense overnight battles occurred outside the city, resulting in military casualties.

The government troops have withdrawn to regroup outside Hama. Hama is a crucial junction linking North and South Syria and was previously under government control.

An inhabitant noted that internet access has been cut off and streets cleared since Wednesday. Last week, HTS captured Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city, previously held by the government after a 2016 Russian-backed offensive.

Russia remains in contact with the Syrian government, monitoring the situation for potential further support.
