A Swiss man accused of espionage has died in an Iranian prison, reportedly by suicide, according to Iranian state media. He was held in Semnan prison, in eastern Iran.
Prison staff allegedly attempted to save his life, but were unsuccessful. The details surrounding his identity and specific charges remain undisclosed, though his case was under investigation.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed his death and stated they are in contact with Iranian authorities. The Iranian regime has previously detained foreigners, often using them as bargaining chips for Iranian citizens imprisoned abroad.
Earlier this week, Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was released from an Iranian prison after being detained for allegedly violating strict Islamic laws. Her release followed diplomatic negotiations between Italy and Iran, which may have involved Iran seeking the release of an Iranian arrested in Italy at the request of the U.S. for allegedly supplying drone parts used in an attack on U.S. military personnel in Jordan.
It is unclear whether he has been released.
