Suspected drug packages found on Dutch beaches

Packages that washed ashore yesterday on the beaches of Egmond and Bergen are suspected to contain drugs. Police are investigating to determine their exact contents.

Acting Mayor Van Kampen of the Bergen municipality issued an emergency order last night, leading to beachgoers being asked to leave by police and local enforcement officers. The customs authorities and other involved services conducted investigations while monitoring the beaches.

All packages were removed. Today, the beaches remain under surveillance.

Police urge anyone who finds a washed-up package to call emergency services and not to open it. In recent weeks, packages have frequently washed ashore along the Dutch coast, including in Scheveningen, Ouddorp, Rockanje, and Oostvoorne, as well as on Dutch and German Wadden Islands.
