Suspected Cable Damage by Tanker Investigated in Finland

The oil tanker suspected of damaging several cables in the Baltic Sea last December had also sailed over a telecommunication cable in the North Sea above the Wadden Islands the previous year. This information was reported by NRC, which analyzed the ship’s location signals.

According to AIS signals, the Eagle S was sailing northeast in the North Sea on November 24 when it abruptly changed course, heading southeast until it reached a location approximately 50 kilometers north of Terschelling in the evening. The transatlantic data cable Atlantic Crossing 1, connecting the United States with the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands, is located there.

That evening, the Eagle S traveled back and forth above the seabed cable at low speed for about two hours. Its purpose there remains unknown.
