Suspect in Newgein Stabbing Did Not Know Victim

The suspect in the fatal stabbing of an 11-year-old girl in Newgein likely did not know the victim, according to police reports. The investigation is ongoing, but police state it is “very likely” that the suspect and victim were strangers.

The incident reportedly happened when the girl was on her way to play with a friend. A peer witnessed the event and contacted the authorities, who found the victim in critical condition, but she could not be saved.

The victim, of Eritrean descent, held Dutch nationality and lived nearby, though not on the same street. The 29-year-old suspect is of Syrian origin and resides in Newgein.

Neighbors had previously reported his erratic behavior. Following discussions with locals, police are reviewing how these reports were handled.

Spokesman Wim Hoonhout confirmed a recent report of a man exhibiting disturbed behavior, but the follow-up is unclear. The incident has deeply affected the community, with a gathering held for residents attended by police and the mayor.
