Two bamboo lemurs were unexpectedly born at ZooParc Overloon. These primates, native to Madagascar, are among the world’s most endangered species due to habitat destruction and hunting.
ZooParc Overloon states that there are only about 2,000 to 2,500 bamboo lemurs left in the wild. The lemurs were born on Sunday, January 12.
Despite earlier signs of pregnancy, the birth was only confirmed upon delivery, according to the zoo. The mother and her offspring are doing well and will remain indoors for now, with plans to move them outside in spring.
The sex of the lemurs will be determined in the coming months, and the zoo intends to leave the mother and her young undisturbed to allow for natural growth and development. It has been over ten years since the last birth of this species at the park, as reported by Omroep Brabant.
Two bamboo lemurs were born in 2019 at Apenheul in Apeldoorn.
