Supermarkets Donate €1.8 Million to Charity After Pricing Errors

Albert Heijn, Jumbo, and Plus have collectively donated €1.8 million to charities due to past pricing errors at checkout counters, such as incorrect prices on receipts from unrecognized discounts. The Consumers’ Association, which has long criticized these errors, reached an agreement with the supermarkets.

According to the association, receipt errors are “almost a thing of the past,” thanks to digital price tags and independent audits. Albert Heijn expressed satisfaction with the agreement and highlighted their investment in electronic shelf labels.

The supermarkets and the Consumers’ Association selected the charities to receive the funds, including Consumers International, Questionmark Foundation, SchuldHulpMaatje, and Voedselbanken Nederland. A potential lawsuit was previously announced by the association against Albert Heijn, but discussions led to this resolution.

The €1.8 million is considered a symbolic amount, as the exact damage is unknown.
