Statues Moved as New Year’s Tradition in Netherlands

The statue of André van Duin’s character Flip Fluitketel was discovered in Elsloo, Friesland, after disappearing from its original location near the Amstelsluis in Amsterdam. Members of the New Year’s association Vesuvius took the statue on Christmas Eve for an annual stunt.

The statue was revealed at a local pub over New Year’s. According to chairman Sil van den Berg of Omrop Fryslân, this year the association wanted to highlight the positive aspects of Elsloo, with Van Duin being a fitting symbol due to the village’s strong community spirit.
