At a school festival in Nigeria, 35 children died in a stampede. Police suspect they were trampled when food and gifts were distributed.
Six individuals were injured. The incident occurred at an Islamic secondary school in the southwestern city of Bashorun, attended by thousands of guests.
Eight people, including the school principal, have been arrested. The investigation into the cause of the stampede is ongoing.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu emphasized the importance of determining whether negligence was involved and urged local authorities to prevent similar incidents. Despite Nigeria’s significant oil production, the country is experiencing its worst economic crisis in two decades, making food and essentials unaffordable for many.
In August, thousands of unemployed youths protested against rising living costs.
