SP regrets supporting controversial migration motion

SP leader Jimmy Dijk expressed regret over his party’s decision to support a motion by VVD member Bente Becker, which called for tracking the “cultural and religious norms and values” of Dutch citizens with a migration background. A majority in the House of Representatives, including the SP, voted in favor.

In a video on X, Dijk admitted they made the “wrong decision” and recognized that many people were affected. He stated that the SP supported the motion to ensure a fact-based debate and to demonstrate that many individuals have successfully integrated on their own, while the government often failed in its responsibilities.

Dijk criticized the government for using migrants as scapegoats. The motion sparked outrage, with accusations of racism on social media.

Becker also released a video on X to refute these charges. The SP later deemed the motion “carelessly and one-sidedly formulated” and vowed to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

A petition to revoke the motion has garnered over 33,000 signatures.
