South Korean prosecutors summoned suspended President Yoon for questioning, but he did not appear, according to Yonhap News Agency. They intend to summon him again regarding his failed attempt to declare martial law.
Yoon announced martial law on December 3, deploying about 1,500 soldiers, but the decision failed and he was heavily criticized. As a result, he was impeached and suspended from his presidential duties by the parliament yesterday.
The Constitutional Court has up to 180 days to decide if Yoon, who is still formally the president, should be permanently removed. Yoon, along with several top officials, is under investigation for possible charges including insurrection, abuse of power, and obstructing citizens’ rights.
Prosecutors had summoned Yoon to appear for questioning today at 10:00 AM CET, but he did not appear and did not provide a reason. They plan to issue another summons tomorrow.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s acting president, Han Duck-soo, has sought to reassure allies by speaking with U.S. President Joe Biden, stating that South Korea will continue its foreign and security policies and maintain a strong relationship with the United States. The Bank of Korea pledged to do everything possible to stabilize financial markets in the country.
