Prosecutors in South Korea have launched a criminal investigation into President Yoon, following his sudden declaration of a state of emergency this week. Special Prosecutor Park informed Yonhap News Agency about the ongoing investigation into allegations of treason and abuse of power by Yoon.
Defense Minister Kim was arrested last night for his alleged involvement in declaring the military emergency, reportedly playing a central role in the decision. Military sources suggest he urged President Yoon to act.
Additionally, Interior Minister Lee announced his resignation, stating in his resignation letter that he failed to serve the public and the president effectively. An effort to impeach President Yoon for declaring the state of emergency failed yesterday, as his People Power Party (PPP) boycotted the impeachment motion, preventing a quorum.
The opposition plans another attempt on December 14. Police estimated 150,000 people protested against Yoon in Seoul yesterday.
President Yoon had tried to bypass parliament with the emergency declaration, accusing the opposition of obstructing the government. However, hours later, parliament successfully passed a motion to lift the martial law, with support from members of Yoon’s party.
Yoon apologized in a televised address for declaring the emergency and vowed not to repeat it.
