South Korean President Yoon Charged with Rebellion

The suspended South Korean President Yoon has been charged with rebellion and leading an uprising following his unexpected declaration of martial law in December. The charges, while anticipated, have come sooner than expected, according to South Korean media.

As he is now officially charged, his trial is likely to commence promptly. Rebellion and leading an uprising are among the few crimes for which the South Korean president does not have immunity.

If convicted, Yoon could face life imprisonment or the death penalty. This marks the first time in South Korea’s history that a sitting head of state is criminally prosecuted.
