South Korean President Faces Travel Ban Amid Legal Issues

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been prohibited from leaving the country following a travel ban imposed by the Ministry of Justice. The ban was requested by an anti-corruption agency, citing ongoing investigations and legal cases against the president.

Furthermore, the South Korean police are considering charging Yoon with rebellion. Although a sitting president cannot typically be prosecuted in South Korea, exceptions exist for charges of treason or rebellion.

Yoon narrowly avoided impeachment last weekend as his party boycotted the vote, preventing a quorum. The opposition plans to initiate another impeachment process.

During the brief martial law declared by Yoon, which lasted only six hours, the then Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun had instructed the military to block the parliament building to prevent the state of emergency from being overturned by a parliamentary vote. Despite military involvement, the parliament was able to lift the martial law.
