The leader of South Korea’s ruling People Power Party has joined calls for the impeachment of President Yoon following his declaration of martial law last Tuesday. Previously opposing impeachment, party leader Han Dong-hun now claims Yoon ordered the arrest of senior politicians during the emergency and intended to extend the military rule.
Han argues that Yoon’s presidency poses a “significant risk” of future extreme actions. The main opposition party already filed an impeachment motion, but requires 200 out of 300 parliamentary votes to succeed, currently holding 192 seats.
While Yoon’s position is secure with his party’s support, if they vote against him, he would be suspended pending a Constitutional Court decision. The exact date for the parliamentary vote remains unspecified.
Yoon’s martial law declaration bypassed parliament, which later passed a motion to lift the state of emergency. Yoon’s popularity has dropped from 19% to 13% following these events.
