Soul legend Sam Moore dies at 89

American singer Sam Moore passed away at the age of 89, according to U.S. media reports, after undergoing surgery. Moore was part of the soul duo Sam & Dave with Dave Prater.

In the 1960s, they achieved hits with songs like “Hold On, I’m Comin,” “Soul Man,” and “I Thank You.” Their most successful hit, “Soul Man,” written by soul legend Isaac Hayes, was inspired by the civil rights movement. The song was a major hit again when covered in the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers,” a fact that Moore was not entirely happy about, as he felt people thought the song was originally by the Blues Brothers.

Sam & Dave disbanded in 1982, after which Moore pursued a solo career. He struggled with a severe drug addiction but later helped others with similar issues by giving lectures in rehabilitation clinics.

Moore performed at an inauguration event for U.S. President Trump in 2017. Previously, he had opposed the use of “Hold On, I’m Comin” by presidential candidate Obama during his campaign.
